Trieste is the administrative capital of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The city is spread over several hills and lies beneath the Carso plateau.
Besides being a major port and a significant industrial and commercial centre, Trieste is a cosmopolitan city with a long history and a rich culture, home to a university, art galleries, museums, theatres, and artistic and cultural groups. It's a crossroad between the Mediterranean and Central Europe, a place where diverse ethnic and religious communities coexist.
