SCHOLARSHIPS

Separate scholarships schemes are being offered both by the Trieste Joyce School and by the International James Joyce Foundation.

1. TRIESTE JOYCE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Trieste Joyce School of the University of Trieste, local organiser of the Eighteenth International Joyce Symposium, in association with the Trieste Azienda di Promozione Turistica, are offering a limited number of full and partial scholarships to enable students (both undergraduates and postgraduates) to attend. Those wishing to apply should send a brief letter of application, a Curriculum Vitae and a letter of reference to John McCourt before 15 March, 2002. Priority will be given to students from Eastern European countries who might not otherwise be able to attend. Applications via email to mccourt@univ.trieste.it are also accepted.

2. INTERNATIONAL JAMES JOYCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

The Foundation offers three categories of student scholarships to attend the International James Joyce Symposium: students from North America, Europe, and elsewhere. Depending on available funds and the quality of the applications, the Board will offer up to six scholarships.

The deadline for applications for the scholarships to assist graduate students attending the Symposium in Trieste is February 15, 2002. The students need not to be members of the Foundation. Any graduate student working on Joyce may apply. The award is for $1100, out of which sum U.S. taxes must be deducted.

Applicants (who must be graduate students when they apply, although they may have completed their work by the time of the award) should send a one-page summary of a book, M.A. thesis, or Ph.D. dissertation, and a brief statement about how the work would be presented at the Symposium. The student should also request that two letters of recommendation be sent by the deadline. All applications and letters of support should be sent to the Foundation office. Scholarship recipients will be notified by the end of March, if not sooner.

3. FRIENDS OF THE ZURICH JAMES JOYCE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The friends of the Zurich James Joyce Foundation are offering a limited number of scholarships to symposium speakers (or would be speakers) coming from Eastern Europe. Applicants are invited to send a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, and a letter of reference to John McCourt (mccourt@univ.trieste.it) by 15 March 2002. The 5 scholarships will be worth approximately 350 Euro each.
